Orion partnered with a leading telecom provider to modernize and secure thousands of network devices, helping them deliver uninterrupted, compliant, and high-performance connectivity for a global financial services customer.

A leading telecom provider managing enterprise network services for a major financial services organization partnered with Orion to modernize and standardize their network infrastructure. The engagement focused on upgrading thousands of network devices while ensuring continuity of service for the client’s financial services customer.

Challenge

The telecom provider was managing more than 5,000 network devices with inconsistent operating system and firmware versions, creating thousands of security vulnerabilities. They needed to complete a full migration in two aggressive phases with minimal disruption to production environments. Over 60 percent of the devices required multi-stage upgrades, requiring careful coordination across teams to maintain continuity and reliability.

Solution

Orion implemented a device-based, triparty outcome model to deliver the program at a fixed price per device. Key actions included:

  • Collaborated with the end client and telco to build a throughput-based team capable of executing the migration in phases.
  • Stood up the engineering team in 15 days and created automations and change management SOPs.
  • Executed IOS, firmware, and Complex Programmable Logic Device (CPLD) upgrades while coordinating handovers to the customer’s Operations and NOC teams.
  • Delivered Phase 1 three months ahead of schedule without impacting production systems.

Environment:

  • Cisco routers (5,000+ devices)
  • Activities: IOS upgrades, firmware updates, change management, CPLD upgrades, and operations handover

Impact

  • Standardized and upgraded network devices across thousands of systems with minimal operational disruption.
  • Reduced vulnerability exposure and ensured compliance across the device estate.
  • Accelerated delivery with phased execution, enabling faster service continuity for the financial services customer.
  • Enhanced operational processes through automation and SOPs, creating repeatable best practices for future upgrades.
